Sweden has three levels of government: national, regional and local. At the local level Sweden has 290 municipalities and Övertorneå is one.
Each municipality has an elected assembly which governs over municipal matters. Some of the services that the municipal provides are regulated by law, such as schools, social services and care for the elderly. Others are not obligated by law and the municipals level of involvement is instead decided by the elected assembly. Such services are for example hiking trails, swimming pools, music- and dance school or sports- and skate parks.
